Information for Little Bits Volunteers

Little Bits could not operate without the many dedicated volunteers who serve as side-walkers, horse-leaders and grooms. No prior experience is necessary but can be an asset. Volunteers are fully trained and encouraged to ask questions.
There are also volunteer opportunities in public relations and fundraising for Little Bits, please ask for further details.

Volunteer Testimonials

"We enjoy volunteering at Little Bits a lot. You and other staff and volunteers are so friendly and patient that we love to come every Sunday though we still have a lot to learn. The way you schedule the volunteers is great as well, Attalie and I can always find the experienced others available to teach us what we need to learn. As the work demand is never too much or too rush, Attalie loves doing what she has learned. I also found out more about riding from other volunteers, Attalie would actually like to try the riding lessons.... Thank you for letting Attalie and I volunteer at Little Bits, it is truly a wonderful experience. See you again tomorrow!"
~ Eleanor C., who volunteers together with her daughter Attalie.

"I really enjoyed helping out!!! Probably one of the best places I've volunteered to date."
Mckenzie Wilson, Volunteer since spring 2012

Becoming a Volunteer

Volunteers are an integral part of the program at Little Bits. They are indeed the backbone of the organization.

Any person 14 years and over can volunteer; previous experience is not required but can be beneficial. The only requirement is the wish to help others achieve their goals. All volunteers are to participate in an orientation session before working in the program. Volunteers are needed on a weekly basis throughout the spring and fall sessions. Their duties are primarily handling the horses and side-walking with the riders. They may also participate in grooming and tacking the horses, fundraising and promotion activities. For more information on volunteer opportunities, contact our Volunteer Coordinator.

Some of the many important functions performed by our volunteers include:

  • Lessons:
This is the main area in which we require volunteers. Volunteers are required to groom and tack horses before and after lessons or leading and side-walking during the lessons. Commitment is approximately 2 - 4 hours per week.
  • Committees:
We have a number of committees that require volunteers including a "Fundraising Committee" and "Communications/ Marketing Committee". Complete terms of reference for each committee are available by contacting us at 780-476-1233.
  • Casino:
Every eighteen months we run a casino. This takes a minimum number of volunteers over a two day period. Shifts are 4 - 6 hours long. The work is easy and the money earned for Little Bits is awesome!
  • Fundraisers:
These are fundraisers that Little Bits may be involved in throughout the year. Examples of past events are: A breakfast event, Daisy Days, Alberta Reined Cow Horse event, The Canadian Rodeo Finals, etc.
